Reaper of Souls™ is the upcoming expansion to Blizzard Entertainment’s epic action RPG Diablo® III—a dark and terrifying new chapter in the ongoing conflict over the mortal realm of Sanctuary.

Q: What is the story of Reaper of Souls?
Following the defeat of the Prime Evil by the Nephalem in Diablo III, the mortal realm of Sanctuary should have entered an age of hope and prosperity. Instead, this event has drawn out a shadowy being of immense power, one more sinister than any demon.

Malthael, the fallen Archangel of Wisdom, vanished long ago. In Reaper of Souls, he returns as the Angel of Death and seizes the Black Soulstone, the ancient artifact containing the essence of the Prime Evil. It is now up to the Nephalem to track down Malthael and thwart his plans, a journey that will take them through the legendary city of Westmarch, across the fetid swamps of the Blood Marsh, and into the ancient halls of the Pandemonium Fortress.

Q. What new features can we expect to see in Reaper of Souls?
In addition to expanding the story of Diablo III with an all-new, action-packed Act V and introducing the incorruptible Crusader class, Reaper of Souls increases the game’s level cap to 70. Players forging ahead with their existing Barbarian, Demon Hunter, Monk, Witch Doctor, and Wizard characters will benefit from an array of fearsome new spells and abilities as they advance in level.

The expansion also builds upon several key features of the Diablo franchise, with a greater emphasis on randomized environments, horrific new monsters, epic new quests, and substantial updates to the loot experience. The redesigned loot system in Reaper of Souls focuses on rewarding players with even better treasure through targeted “smart drops,” new and improved multi-level Legendary items, and a third artisan, the Mystic, who can augment an item’s power and appearance.

A new Adventure Mode has been added as well; with all Waypoints unlocked in this mode, the entire world becomes the player’s battlefield! Included in Adventure Mode are two new game features, Bounties, a randomized objective system, and Nephalem Rifts aka Loot Runs, a randomized dungeon system, provide fun and rewarding challenges for players to tackle when they’re looking for new ways to test their might. Diablo III’s Paragon progression system will also be receiving several updates for the expansion, adding even more endgame character advancement and replayability.

Q. What is Adventure Mode?
In Reaper of Souls, players will be able to experience the world of Sanctuary through two different games modes: Campaign Mode and Adventure Mode.
In Campaign Mode, players reprise their pivotal roles as the heroes of Sanctuary in this latest chapter of the continuing Diablo saga. All quests, cut-scenes, in-game movies, and NPC dialogue will be available and progression is intentionally linear. Campaign Mode is very similar to how Diablo III plays currently.

Adventure Mode is Diablo III’s new sandbox mode, where players have the freedom to explore and play the game however they like. All waypoints are now unlocked, soplayers can go where they want, when they want. The waypoint list has been replaced with a waypoint map, a metaphor for the world that serves as a guide for Bounties and a checklist of completed gameplay options. The world is literally your battlefield! Adventure Mode also includes the aforementioned Bounties and Nephalem Rifts.

Q: Can you give us more background on Malthael?
Quiet and elusive, Malthael was an enigma even to his own kind. In the years following the destruction of the Worldstone, this revered member of the Angiris Council grew increasingly distant and withdrawn, prone to long periods of isolation. Malthael’s eventual disappearance led to his transformation into the Angel of Death—a cataclysmic threat to the people of Sanctuary.

Q: What can you tell us about the new class: the Crusader? Will the Crusader be available to all players?
Crusaders are righteous warriors who have been hardened through relentless, brutal combat with the foul evils plaguing eastern Sanctuary. In addition to wearing immensely heavy armor and wielding a wide range of cruel and punishing weapons, this new playable class uses battle magic to strengthen allies and weaken foes. A natural walking tank with a plethora of mid-range melee abilities, the Crusader adds power and versatility to any party of adventurers.

The Crusader class will only be available to players who purchase the expansion.

Q. Have any changes been made to the difficulty scaling or settings in Reaper of Souls?
In Reaper of Souls, the game difficulty settings have been updated to Easy, Normal, Hard, Torment, Demonic and Apocalypse. Similar to the way the tiered settings and Monster Power work in Diablo III, higher difficulty levels present more powerful enemies who will potentially reward players with more powerful loot! Unlike the previous tiered difficulty system, though, players are not required to defeat the game on a lower setting in order to unlock a higher difficulty setting. These settings can be selected at any time, for both Campaign Mode and Adventure Mode, making it more convenient than ever to find the level of challenge that’s right for you!

Q. How does the new Paragon system work? Will the new Paragon system be available to all players?
We’ve made three significant changes to the Paragon system:
  • There is no cap on Paragon levels. Players can now earn as many Paragon levels as they please.
  • Paragon levels are now account-wide per game type. Normal characters on an account will share a Paragon level. Similarly, all Hardcore characters on an account will share a Paragon level. Any Paragon experience you gain on your Normal or Hardcore characters will contribute to your account’s “Normal Paragon level” or “Hardcore Paragon level.”
  • Players will now earn Paragon Points each time they level up. These points can then be spent to boost up various stats in four different categories: Core Stats, Offensive, Defensive, and Adventure.  All characters on your account have their own version of the allocated points, which can be reallocated at any time.
These changes are intended to be released as part of a pre-expansion patch and will be made available to all players.

Q: Will there be an auction house in Reaper of Souls?
A: The gold and real-money auctions house will be removed from Diablo III on March 18, 2014 and will not appear in Reaper of Souls.

Q. Will players who have Reaper of Souls still be able to play with people who don’t?
Currently, yes; however, Act V will not be available to players who haven’t purchased the expansion.

Q. Will there be a beta for Reaper of Souls?
A:  We don’t have any details to share at this time.

Q. When is Reaper of Souls going to be released?
A: We aren’t ready to confirm a launch date at this time.

Q. What’s the price for Reaper of Souls? Will there be a Collector’s Edition for Reaper of Souls?
A: We aren’t ready to confirm the price or the availability of a Collector’s Edition at this time.

Q. What languages will Reaper of Souls be available in?
A: At release the game will be fully localized into English, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, European Spanish, Italian, Polish, Russian, Korean, and Traditional Chinese for Windows, and English, French, and German for Mac.

Q. Will Reaper of Souls still be rated M (Mature)?
A: We haven’t submitted for a rating yet. We’ll share more information about our global ratings once they are officially set.

  • The smaller team has helped them pursue their dreams for Hearthstone and allowed them to focus on the important things.
  • Everyone on the team, and more importantly, Blizzard, has always loved card games.

Goals for Hearthstone

  • Hearthstone is a game for everyone. A game for everyone has to be accessible.
    • Although they kept things simple, it still has plenty of depth. No one likes a game you're done playing after a week.
  • Keep the game physical. Make it feel like the players are actually holding and playing their cards.
    • Accomplished through animations!
  • It was important to keep the game flavorful.
    • As Hearthstone is based on Warcraft, and more importantly, World of Warcraft, the team aimed to keep that Warcraft feel, but adding some more silliness to it.
  • The gameplay had to be fast paced.
    • Games that will be played on mobile need to be finished quicker for those on the go.
    • Having mana crystals as a resource you gained per turn kept the speed up because you aren't waiting for resource cards each turn.
  • The game had to be fun.
    • Getting rid of things like resource destruction and milling really helped keep people from feeling like they were doomed.

Making the Game

  • There was a lot of iteration and prototyping with Hearthstone.
    • One of the physical prototypes hey tried as to cut text out of the cards. Cards were created with only art and attack/health values and they found they could play it well. This is why you only see portraits on the battlefield.
    • Hearthstone was put onto a web interface after their physical testing. Much was learned about designing the interface here.
  • Combat Tricks! It's a trap! If you attacked your opponent and you had a combat trick up, it would allow you to play a card on your opponents turn to mess a round with their attack.
    • They found out when they removed Combat Tricks, it was actually a lot more fun and it increased the pace as well.
  • The interface moved onto being more comical, and then they thought "hey, what if this game was played in a tavern?".
  • The next version of the gameboard involved setting the player inside of a virtual gameboard on the table in a tavern.
  • Being a virtual card game, it let the developers do stuff that would be very hard, or impossible to accomplish in the real world.
  • There were also plenty of cards that did not work out though as well.
    • Devouring Ooze: Battlecry: Gain +1/+1 for each game you've lost in a row.
    • Auto-Pecker 4000: Deal 1 damage to any player who mouses-over this minion.
    • Worldflipper X-50: Flip your opponent's screen upside down.
  • Although they wanted to keep the game feeling physical, having a pile of cards on your screen to form your decks was frustrating.
    • This lead to the current version of the Deck Builder!
  • A lot of the developers really love draft mode. They knew something had to be done for Hearthstone.
    • In a normal draft, you buy in with a set number of packs, and pass packs around a circle of friends and each pick one card out of each pack until all the cards are gone.
    • Normal drafing wouldn't work with Hearthstone though. What if people didn't have enough friends to play draft, or their friends went offline?
      • Asynchronous drafting was created to fix this!

Making a Card

  • What makes a card awesome in Hearthstone?
    • Cards must be easy to understand. You should be able to look at a card that you just got out of a pack and can think about how you'd be able to integrate it into your deck.
    • The original version of Whirlwind was too complicated and required too much thought to process the card.

 The Beta Test

  • Over one million beta invites have been sent out so far!

Future Patches

  • Some really amazing stuff coming up.
  • Card changes!
  • Ranked playmode changes!
    • There are going to 25 new ranks in ranked playmode.
      • Angry Chicken is the first ranked level! Everyone will be reset to Angry Chicken when ladders reset.
    • Each rank will have 5 star levels.
    • Ranks will reset every month at the start of the next season.
    • At the end of each season, if you participate in that season, you will be given new artwork for your card backs!
  • The Arena changes!
    • Three new keys being added for a total of 12 possible wins!
      • Molten Key
      • Frostborn Key
      • Lightforged Key
    • If you go past 9 wins, there will be even better rewards!

The Future of Hearthstone

  • Going Mobile!
    • There is work on the Android version of Hearthstone. No time frame currently, but likely the second half of 2014.
    • iPhone will be getting its own version of Hearthstone in addition to the iPad.
  • Expansions!
    • New cards, new features!

  • Draenor is a very savage world, so you can become a savage yourself or work with your own faction to avoid doing so.
  • The Draenei will react to the savage world, looking at important points in their history.
  • The Frostwolf Clan is still in the early stages, not working together very well yet.
  • The team went through many iterations to figure out how the Warlords would be brought back. Garrosh was originally going to go back to Outland and resurrect the Warlords, but that concept didn't work out well.
  • This isn't a time travel expansion, time travel is just a tool to explain the ongoing story. It isn't being used to massively change the current timeline. The past is fine!
  • Shattrath was a giant coastal city.
  • This setting allows for the creation of some really over the top villains. "What if the baddest badasses in Warcraft history got together"
  • Is Thrall's father a hero? Is he a villain?
  • Thrall has some work to do in bringing Garrosh to justice.
  • The Draenei haven't had a lot of story in previous expansions, but this one gives the team a chance to look at who they were before the Draenei we know today.
  • The world will be a little more like Timeless Isle, with things like a caravan of Iron Horde being stranded in the snow that you can kill to take the treasure they were hauling. This isn't a quest, just one of the events in the new and more dynamic world.

Any update on the book that was being written about Kael'thas?
We are making progress and it is near completion.

How is this time travel going to work with the story?
We aren't going back in time, the Dark Portal is turning red, bad guys are coming through. We look at the Orc Clans as they were, but things are happening now. The end of this expansion will launch the next one.

Did Outland happen or was it changed by going back in time?
Outland is still out there.

Will we see Alleria and Turalyon again?
Not yet. But you will see Khadgar.

The southernmost points of the world are jungle or desert, meaning we are near the equator. Is there another half of the planet left to still explore?
Yes. No. Maybe.

Will we see Paladin lore in this expansion?
Yes, lots of it.

Will Garrosh be redeemed?
No, but we will provide a satisfying ending for you and him.

Is Chris Metzen going to voice the father of Thrall?

Where is Orgrim Doomhammer?
You will see him. He isn't one of the chief Warlords, but he is definitely involved and you will see his story.

Will we have two of characters due to the time travel?
No, this isn't a time travel or paradox story, it is about going to Draenor.

What is going on with the Pandaren faction leaders? We don't really see much of them.
It was a matter of time. We didn't have the chance to do a lot with the Pandaren faction leaders.

How will characters be impacted by seeing family that they never knew?
Garrosh and Thrall didn't know their parents well, so this gives us a chance to show them learning about their family and history. Thrall meets his family and it is really what he needs.

Is there a chance of looking at alternative realities based on what we change by going back in time?
Yes, it will give us that opportunity. It affects our current timeline, but does not affect the past.

What is going on with the Dragonmaw?
Zaela goes back with Garrosh.

Will we see Thrall's mom? Grandma?
Yes and yes.

Is Aggra going to go back with Thrall?

What about Garona?
We will see her.

Does Grom age?
Yes, he is aging. He is old enough to be Thrall's dad now.

The timeline is during Rise of the Horde?
Garrosh goes back a few years before they drink the blood. So it is during Rise of the Horde before critical events take place.

What is going on with Sylvanas?
She is in the background doing crafty things. We will put the spotlight on her one day.

Will the Blood Elves play a role in this expansion?
Yes. Blood Elf paladins, how the light works, and what the Draenei have been up to will be explained.

Is Silvermoon going to be updated?

What kind of Shamanism will we see on Draenor and will it change our Shamanism?
You will see Drek'thar going blind from messing with the elements and other shamanism story.
